Gelly Roll pens have been around for more than 40 years, so it’s always a fun surprise when a new one is released. This time, Sakura has cheekily turned the iconic Gelly Roll cap into a button, permanently attached to the back of the pen and spring-loaded, so you can click to extend your favorite pen.

ABOUT GELLY ROLL PENS

Sakura Color Products invented the gel pen in the early 1980s, and by the end of the decade, they had introduced the iconic Gelly Roll to a highly receptive U.S. market. Most of us at St. Louis Art Supply were kids in the 1990s, so we remember Gelly Rolls as coveted, cool pens that we all wanted in our backpacks. They were smoother than other pens, and the metallic colors were super shiny. You could imagine the way it would look from the sparkly cap, and it was easy enough for anyone to use.

If you have fond memories of Gelly Rolls, you’ll be pleased to know that they’re still excellent, still made in Japan, and still super shiny and smooth. The thick gel ink is opaque on a wide variety of paper types, and the lighter colors can be used on black paper for sparkly, opaque writing.
