Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits for Safe Solvent Use

We strongly recommend Gamsol to all oil painters, regardless of what brand of paint they choose. Unlike many thinners and solvents marked “odorless,” Gamsol genuinely doesn’t smell. It’s less flammable than turpentine and safer to use. You can use it for:

Thinning oil colors. A little goes a long way; stiff oil colors relax immediately when a little Gamsol is added. Colors thinned with Gamsol dry more matte and are perfect for underpainting. Be careful not to thin oil colors too much with solvent alone; this can compromise the ability of the paint to form a paint film.

Modifying painting mediums. Gamblin’s Galkyd line of painting mediums are made with Gamsol, so they readily accept Gamsol as a thinning agent. It also works in combination with linseed and other oils for traditional oil painting techniques. Note: Gamsol should not be added to painting mediums made with natural resins (dammar, copal, mastic). Turpentine should be used instead with these mediums.
Studio clean-up. Gamsol readily cleans brushes, palettes, and palette knives.

How does Gamsol achieve this level of performance and safety? Most solvents available to artists come from the industrial paint industry where solvent power and cheapness is prized. Gamsol is special: it is made for products and processes that come into more intimate contact with the body such as cosmetics, hand cleaners, and cleaning food service equipment.
