About Harrisville Designs
Harrisville, New Hampshire has been a wool-spinning town for nearly the entire history of the United States. Since 1794, they’ve been spinning yarn in Harrisville’s brick mills, powered by the flow of the Nubanusit River and the hands of skilled artisans.
Harrisville Designs was founded in 1971, as textile mills closed across the country due to cheap competition from overseas. The Colony family, who had owned the large-scale Cheshire Mills in Harrisville before its closure in 1970, turned their attention to preserving the town and its textile tradition. The old Cheshire buildings were turned into smaller-scale workshops, and the company began creating old-fashioned tools for hand-weaving.
Today, Harrisville Designs still spins wool in New Hampshire, but they’re equally well-known for their top-quality looms and their advocacy of traditional textile crafts. From kids’ potholder looms and simple drop spindles to deluxe floor looms for large-format weaving, Harrisville is synonymous with fiber arts — just as it has been since the 18th century.
